How to Plan the Perfect Long Weekend Road Trip

The daily grind of balancing emails, meetings, getting to pilates class, meal prepping and finding time for self-care can start to feel draining after a while. When you're craving an escape from your day in and day out routine, there's nothing quite like unplugging for a long weekend road trip adventure. Getting out on the open road with your best friend or significant other allows you to truly unwind and unplug, explore new places, and create lasting memories together.

If you've been dreaming of a restorative long weekend getaway, here are some tips for planning the ultimate road trip:

Choose Your Destination Wisely

While it's tempting to just pick a far-off location and take the most direct route, the best road trips are all about the journey, not just the final stop. Spend some time mapping out a route that lets you experience cool small towns, scenic landscapes, roadside attractions, or national/state parks along the way. For a long weekend, I'd recommend keeping your radius to a max of 3-4 hours away so you can maximize sightseeing without driving 8 hours per day.

Stay in a Memorable Accommodation

Instead of just booking generic hotel rooms, seek out unique stays that add to the overall experience, you’re looking to shake things up after all! Scour Airbnb for charming cottages, tiny homes, or vintage campers with local flair. If your budget allows, you could also consider splurging on a night or two at a boutique hotel. At the very least, opt for a hotel with character over bland chain properties. A memorable accommodation turns a road trip into a true escape.

Pack Supplies for the Journey

A road trip can quickly lose its luster if you or your road trip partner become hangry or you lose cell service and your tunes suddenly cut out. Before departing, stock your vehicle with snacks, drinks, phone chargers, a portable battery pack, downloaded playlists/audiobooks/podcasts for entertainment during dead zones, and even a basic car emergency supplies kit (just in case!). I’d also recommend carrying a little bit of cash for small town stores or restaurants/bars that don't take cards. And of course, pack versatile layers to stay comfy in varying weather conditions.

Stay Flexible

The beauty of a road trip is having plenty of unhurried time to wander and explore each stop along the way. Allow yourself the flexibility to linger in places that captivate you, and don’t be afraid to deviate from your original plan if something unexpected piques your interest or you find the perfect Instagram photo spot. The most memorable trips always allow for a bit of spontaneity.

Ultimately, wherever you choose to go or how you choose to get there, a long weekend road trip offers the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the daily grind and shake up your normal routine. Spend quality time with your favorite person(s), take in new sights and experiences, and should leave you returning home feeling revitalized. Pack your bags, get your playlists lined up, and get ready for your next adventure on wheels!
